RE: MY EMAILED RESPONSE TO THE GOVERNOR

The Governor RE'd my RE. I guess it's an intelligent response but I'm slightly infuriated by the lack of one-liners.

"Thank you for sharing your concerns with me about the proposal to lift restrictions on hold times at animal shelters.  I value your input during these challenging economic times.

As you know, we are in the midst of the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression.  We now face a budget shortfall that has grown to $24.3 billion.  I have proposed cuts that I would have never proposed except in a worst-case scenario, including eliminating General Fund support for programs like Healthy Families, CalWORKs, Cal Grants and State Parks.  This was not an easy decision for me.  As a dog owner myself, I have always supported animal welfare and have worked to ensure the humane treatment of animals.

Currently, the state requires all shelters to hold stray animals for four or six days and reimburses them for the associated costs.  To address our budget crisis, I have proposed to suspend some Non-Proposition 98 mandates, including the reimbursement funds for these shelters.  To help local shelters deal with the challenges of this difficult budget situation, I have also proposed that the state no longer require the four or six day hold time. Shelters still have the flexibility to keep the animals for more days, but my proposal avoids placing an unnecessary burden on local communities.

As I work with my partners in the Legislature to find solutions to these problems, know that I will keep your thoughts in mind.  Working together, I believe we can weather this storm and start the slow but steady march back toward prosperity.

Sincerely,

Arnold ' Schwarzenegger "

After reading this I had that feeling... like so many others received this exact email cried out in "meh".. and were suddenly silenced.

MY EMAILED RESPONSE TO THE GOVERNATOR'S PROPOSAL

To pull our state's.... state.. out of such poor economic condition, Schwarzeneggar wants to reduce the amount of days an animal shelter can keep in animal from 6 to 3 days.

News story here: http://www.dogmagazine.net/archives/2847/arnold-schwarzeneggers-shelter-kill-policy-condemned/

This made me angry. So i replied to it via the "email the governor" section of his web site.

I think I got my point across... with some treats a long the way.

SUBJECT: Reducing the end of days an animal can stay in a shelter from 6 to 3 before they are euthanized, because it will supposedly save millions.

It is a desperate, unnecessary, and cruel idea to put the red heat on so many homeless animals. Now I'm the last kind of action hero to get on a soap box, and I don't know any more than the average running man. But is it really costing the state that much money to give clean food and water to starving animals until the 6th day as opposed to the 3rd? I'd like to see the numbers on that because it sounds like you cooked up a story and dropped all the animals in a meatgrinder.

What kind of a predator would go so commando to think it necessary to terminate these lives just to save money? The alcohol tax and steeper traffic violations were annoying but I will take them over erasing innocent creatures any day. So is that what this is? A ruse so your other ridiculous budget proposals don't look so crappy by comparison?

Well maybe it would save money. And maybe it would save even more money to set all the elementary schools on fire so only the smart kindergartners that know their fire drills would survive - while hopefully remembering to save their ferrets. But I don't think you are the Arnold that wants to save ferrets OR humanity OR Daynaaaaaaa. Saving money doesn't justify drastic measures.

In short: if it bleeds, you can't just kill it. Domestic animals - much like certain invalids or seniors with very specific needs - have no voice. They look up to us. They come with us if they want to live. So the least we can do is give them their 6 days before they get the old needle.

Anyway, why should animals get the raw deal because of what YOU have done to send the state's economy jingling all the way to freeze in hell? Go get man-pregnant again or maybe just stop fucking California in the ass. You have collateral damaged this state beyond all recognition. I can't wait until your term gets its total recall. If this kind of behavior keeps up, I just might take a Christmas in Connecticut and never come back.
